A MORE PROSPEROUS VIRGINIA…Breaks down barriers to success
Occupational licensing: Virginia’s occupational licensure laws create roadblocks for hardworking, would-be entrepreneurs by requiring steep fees and months of training before they can offer their services and meet real needs. According to a 2015 White House report, it takes an average 462 hours to become licensed in Virginia (averaged among all licensed occupations in the state). The burdens of occupational licensing fall the hardest on people the least fortunate, military families, immigrants, and those who have run afoul of the broken criminal justice system. These are the people who need economic opportunity the most — and our own government is standing in their way. Every Virginian deserves the opportunity to pursue their passion and turn it into an economic opportunity. We are encouraging lawmakers to repeal these licensing barriers, allowing everyone the opportunity and potential to succeed.
School choice: Our families need school choice because our children have diverse needs and need different learning environments and classrooms to succeed. Parents should have the opportunity to decide where their children go to school. This should not be determined by politicians, the parent’s zip code, or their income. More educational opportunities for more children should be a top concern for all Virginians. That’s why we are encouraging lawmakers to prioritize improving school choice and access in education by increasing state charter school funding, deregulating virtual schools, and passing education savings account legislation—allowing money to follow students to pay for educational expenses.
